ANGIKA is a leading British Indian dance company of the current generation and they have been recently appointed Choreographers-in-Residence at The Place, London (one of the largest and most prestigious contemporary dance institutions in the UK). The company was founded in 1997 as a creative partnership between London based choreographers and Bharatanatyam dancers Mayuri Boonham and Subathra Subramaniam. An outstanding first performance of Sudarsana in 1998 led to an unusual invitation to perform the dance again in The Place's annual Resolution! Season and established ANGIKA as the most promising British Indian dance company of the current generation. In the same year they were selected to perform in the prestigious City of London Festival's Around the World in 18 Days season where they represented India and became the first South Asian Associate Artists at The Place Theatre (1998-1999).
The company is committed to developing the powerful and rich vocabulary of classical Bharatanatyam dance with a contemporary approach. ANGIKA do not fuse Bharatanatyam with other dance forms but innovate and build within the strengths and richness of its own unique vocabulary; as they believe that true artistic freedom is within the discipline of their respective form.
Over the years their dance and music collaborations have been conscientiously expanding the boundaries of the classical framework of dance and music performances. ANGIKA regularly work with a diverse range of leading composers, musicians, designers and performers to devise original works.
ANGIKA have performed their work extensively at some of the most prestigious dance seasons, festivals and venues throughout the UK. They have created and toured Sudarsana (Beauteous-Sight), Kala (Time) both with music composed by Shin Parwana (DCS) and Paul Timothy, The-Triple-Hymn (music by Rudi Van Dijk)Êand Pulse of Tala (music by Talvin Singh). In February 2002, they were filmed for Channel 4's education series REWIND where ANGIKA and Talvin Singh discussed their dance and music collaboration for Pulse of Tala. REWIND featured an introduction by Courtney Pine and has been broadcast on television worldwide.
In summer 2003 ANGIKA were invited to curate and conduct a one-week residency and commissioned to create Urban Temple, a site-specific performance at the Royal Festival Hall, London with original music by New Delhi's MIDIval PunditZ. In the same year they participated in The Hothouse, an advanced professional intensive choreographic laboratory under Jonathan Burrows.
ANGIKA were Associate Artists at The Place 1998-99 and from May 2004 to 2006 are appointed Choreographers in Residence at The Place. ANGIKA have been commissioned to create "Soul of Light", a new work as part of The Place Prize commissions.
